'Angels
Fever' to Climax in May Day Parade
by
Roggie McFadden
ANAHEIM -- November 7, 2002 -- Astonishing sales
of bright red Angels gear were recorded during the bedlam of 'Angels
Fever' that gripped the Southland this fall. The unexpected success
has convinced executives at Disney to capitalize with a marketing
strategy extending the 'Fever' into the 2003 season, and culminating
in a festive procession through Anaheim next May.
The parade planned for next May 1 will convert Katella
Avenue into a veritable Angels Paradise. Disney is still mum on
what the parade will feature, but, like May Day parades of yore,
it will be without a doubt a fantastical display of red of all sorts.
Rally Monkeys will likely appear along with the
deafening pounding from Angels fans' appropriately titled 'noisemakers.'
With the endless rhythm of red vinyl sticks banging together in
unison throughout the rally, a mindless time is guaranteed for all.
"We should be proud of our Angels," said
long-suffering fan Stacey Donavich. "After 40 years of oppression,
of having to deal with a system in baseball of unequal distribution
of wealth, I'm real glad to see our Angels' 'October Revolution'
this year."
Disney officials hope to bring a patriotic feel
to the affair. "There will be some tanks rolling along among
the Scott Spiezio and Shawn Wooten floats and maybe we'll call up
a couple jet planes to do some tricks. We want to pay tribute to
our servicemen and women overseas."
The heavy artillery will only be part of the show
as 152 rockets will be fired off in commemoration of each Angels
homerun in 2002. Though Disney isn't planning on changing the name
of the diamond at Edison Field to 'Red Square' anytime soon, fans
can still dream.
Those like Donavich had kind words for the scheduled
parade: "With Chairman Eisner presiding, and the throngs dandied
up in their cheerful red World Championship Angels jerseys, caps,
sweatshirts, band-aids, lip gloss, eyeshadow
Well, you can
just imagine the beauty of all that unity and all that red."
